Well, it’s that time of year again. The time to turn small snippets of CoD multiplayer game play videos into excitement and speculation. This weekend marks the Call of Duty XP event in Los Angeles, California, and has already produced many game play videos giving plenty to dissect and digest.
In years past, since the release of the original Modern Warfare, it has been interesting to see the similarities and differences in each new iteration of the Call of Duty series. Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t disappoint in either regard. With kill streaks and equipment harkening back as far as the days of World at War, it will be interesting to see if MW3 can live up to what is expected out of any Call of Duty title.
Now, on to what we know. A new addition this year will be Survival mode. A game mode in the spirit of Zombies from the last 2 Treyarch installments, the goal of which will be to simply last as many rounds as you can. However, instead of mindless zombies coming for you at a snail’s pace, you will endure waves of enemy combatants, using several different means at their disposal. Fear not though, you won’t be left out in the cold. Each kill you rack up will earn you money towards kills, equipment and other items that will help you fend off the endless droves of enemies. I am particularly looking forward to this game type. You may disagree, but I have found “zombies” to be rather repetitive.
For multiplayer, tons of information has become available. For one there is a new “Points” system. Since COD4, rewards have been given solely for kill streaks attained before dying. This year the points system supplants it, giving points not only for kills, but for plants, defuses, captures, defends and assists as well. Much will be the same, but even more will be different. Firstly, you will still choose 3 rewards to have only now point streak rewards are broken into 3 different “Strike Chains.” Each strike chain has different characteristics besides the different rewards that are available.
The assault strike package will be more like what you’ve seen in the past. Points go away when you die, and the lineup of rewards is very similar to those seen before, with additions and removals, of course. The support package is a bit different and will appeal to many because your points accumulate despite death. Streak rewards in this chain are also more designed to help the team rather than to help the person calling them in. Lastly, the specialist package is a completely new idea. Here, streaks of 2, 4 and 6 reward the person with 1, 2 and 3 extra perks respectively and if a streak of 8 is attained all 14 perks and their pro versions will be equipped until death when it all starts over.
Personally, much of this looks particularly interesting. I fear that there’s the possibility of repeating the mistake of fixing something that wasn’t broken, which resulted in Black Ops. However, I am hopeful that these differences will provide an overall positive gaming experience and fill in for the deficiencies experienced with Black Ops. In Part 2, we will go over multiplayer game types, weapons, attachments, perks, the new Prestige Shop, and a deeper look into each of the selectable point streak rewards, so stay tuned.
