Our Story
Ryan Williams is an active duty Staff Sergeant and President of Pro Military Gaming, a nonprofit that organizes video game tournaments on military installations. The idea for Pro Military Gaming originated when he became aggravated with playing games online with adolescences and individuals lacking integrity. Instead, he believed that a gaming community of military members would be a better experience providing solidarity and entertainment. Never did he imagine that the idea would have such an impact on his upcoming deployment and next assignment to Elmendorf AFB, AK.
Newtroop.com (now known as Promilitarygaming.com) launched during a deployment to Balad AB, Iraq (2005) to help with morale and bolster camaraderie among his peers. Very small-scale competitions took place during that time because free time was so scarce but these baby steps prepared for large-scale tournaments in Alaska. Once in Alaska it became apparent that the long winters and prolonged night cycle was very damaging to morale.
Using PMG he was able to collaborate with Services and MWR to coordinate events and secure games, prizes and equipment. Large tournaments took place that hosted the likes of single Soldiers and Airman all the way up to the Vice Wing Commander. Over the course of 3 years, 400 Airmen and Soldiers played in PMG co-hosted events and were awarded more than $500 in prizes. Word spread and New Troop Professional Military Gaming made it into the Military Times newspaper where hundreds of military members learned about the nonprofit. Unfortunately, not having the monetary resources to grow a site that could handle so many excited members caused the loss of much of that membership like a supernova. Word of mouth from satisfied customers is invaluable but money for advertising and web development is a necessity. Ryan went back to the drawing board and developed a much more robust site that will cater to larger membership, bigger events, and a fundraiser approach to raising funds to pay for events.
Currently, PMG is ramping up for a Battlefield 3 tournament at Joint Base Langley-Eustis on Oct 29th of this year. Money raised will be used to pay for equipment, games, and prizes for the winners. The site which originally started off as a forum for members to meet one another now provides members with not only a forum but also posts gaming news, videos, and opinion pieces written by military members concerning the gaming industry and military life.
